Why one flat pillow cannot suit every sleeping position

Because a side sleeper and a back sleeper do not need the same thickness. On your side, the pillow has to fill the distance between shoulder and ear; on your back, that same thickness pushes your head forward.
A sleeper on her back, head resting in the central hollow of the Cradleform pillow

This is the contradiction everyone runs into. Lying on your side, your head is held away from the mattress by the width of your shoulder — often four to six inches. A pillow that is too flat lets your neck tilt downward all night. Lying on your back, the gap to fill drops to an inch or two: the same pillow now props your head too high and pushes your chin toward your chest. Most pillows answer one of those two situations and ignore the other. You pick firm or soft, thick or flat, and you put up with the rest. Except that nobody spends a whole night in one position — people change several times, usually without noticing. The Cradleform pillow is built with two distinct sides. One is hollowed at the center, with a low ridge that follows the curve of the neck: that is the back-sleeping side. The other is continuous and thicker, shaped to fill the space between shoulder and ear: that is the side-sleeping side. Two raised wings extend the surface so an arm can slide underneath. There is nothing to adjust, nothing to add or remove. You turn the pillow over. That is also how buyers describe it when they compare the two sides: one is a little lower, the other a little higher and firmer.

See the difference

Flat pillow, contoured pillow: what changes

On a flat surface the head is pushed forward and the neck drops out of line with the back. On the contoured side the head settles into the hollow and the ridge picks up the curve, so head, neck and spine stay in line.

What changes

Three things you notice on the first night

Two heights, one pillow

The contoured side for your back, the full side for your side.

You do not have to pick one at checkout, and you do not have to stack a second pillow when you change position in the night.

Zip-off cover, washable

Memory foam does not go in the machine. Its cover does.

A zip runs the full length: take the cover off, wash it, put it back. A standard pillowcase goes over the top if you want one.

A central hollow, not a flat slab

The head settles into the hollow instead of sliding down a slope.

The two raised wings leave room for arm and shoulder, so you do not end up folding an arm under the pillow to find a stable position.

The right side for your sleeping position

The two sides are not interchangeable, and which one to start with is the question buyers ask most often when the parcel arrives. Here is how each side is meant to be used.

Choosing and using a memory foam pillow

How do you know if the height is right?

The simplest check is done lying down, not standing in a shop. Lie on your side in your usual position and ask someone to look at you head-on. Your nose, your chin and the notch between your collarbones should line up. If your head tilts toward the mattress, the pillow is too low. If it is pushed upward, it is too thick.

Do the same test on your back: your chin should neither point at the ceiling nor be tucked into your chest. Those two different measurements are exactly why this pillow has two sides — the raised side for the first case, the contoured side for the second.

Allow a few nights to adjust. Memory foam works with body heat: it is firmer when you lie down than it is a few minutes later. If you are coming from a soft pillow, the first evenings feel noticeably firmer. That is normal, and it is the comment that comes up most often in reviews.

On care: the foam never goes in a washing machine. It would lose its shape and never recover it. Only the cover is washable. Unzip it, wash it at 30 °C, and leave the foam out in the air for a few hours before putting the cover back on. A standard pillowcase can go over the top.

"Probably the best pillow my wife has tried. She is happy with it, she sleeps well and her neck no longer hurts. The cover has a zip, so you can take it off and wash it."

— Marek P., buyer review

★★★★★

"I have been using it for about four nights and I love it. The texture is very soft. It does take getting used to, in the sense that you feel the support from the first night."

— Elena S., buyer review

★★★★★

"Absolutely comfortable. The central hollow fits the head perfectly, and the side flaps help release the tension in the neck."

By name

Which pillow are you actually looking for?

The same shape is sold under half a dozen names, and each one answers a slightly different question. Here is what each page covers.

  • Side sleeper pillow — the measurement that decides everything: your own shoulder-to-ear gap
  • Memory foam — what viscoelastic foam changes — density, firmness at bedtime, heat, care
  • Contour pillow — the profile seen from the side: two heights on one pillow, and which to start on
  • Butterfly pillow — the shape seen from above: two wings, a central hollow, a neck bolster
  • Neck support — what support means physically, and why a soft pillow gives none
  • Orthopedic pillow — what the word covers, and what to read instead of the label
  • Ergonomic pillow — shaping the object around the body, applied to seven hours of stillness
  • Neck roll — the cylinder under the neck, and why it works better built in
  • Firmness — firm, medium or soft, decided by position and build rather than preference
FAQ

Your questions about memory foam pillows

Which side should I use if I sleep on my side?

The raised side, the one with the continuous surface. It fills the gap between your shoulder and your ear, which keeps your neck in line with your spine instead of bending it downward.

Is the pillow firm or soft?

Firm. Memory foam softens with body heat after a few minutes, but it stays firmer than a fiber pillow — that is what holds the neck instead of letting it sink. If you are coming from a very soft pillow, expect a few nights of adjustment.

Can you wash a memory foam pillow?

The cover unzips and goes in the machine at 30 °C. The foam itself never goes in a machine — it would lose its shape and never recover it. Air it out instead, flat and away from direct sun.

Do I need a special pillowcase?

No. The pillow ships with its own cover, and a standard-size pillowcase goes over it if you want one.

How long does it take to get used to?

Most buyers describe three to seven nights. That is how long it takes for a neck to get used to support it did not have before — the first two nights often feel odd rather than comfortable.

Does it work if I move around during the night?

Yes — that is the reason for the two sides. Most people switch position without noticing, and the raised side wings leave room for the arm and shoulder when you roll onto your side.

How do I know which side is right for me?

Lie down in your usual position and have someone photograph you head-on, at mattress level. Your nose, chin and the notch between your collarbones should form a straight line. If that line drops, use the raised side; if it rises, use the contoured one.

How long is delivery?
